Astronomers at Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA said that they have found 715 new planets. The announcement was made on February 26, 2014. The total count of planets (including the new 715) is now at 1,700 according to the astronomers. How did the astronomers come up with this number? The answer lies in the telescope called the Kepler.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration positively confirmed the new planets. According to NASA, the planets were spotted by Kepler space telescope, which was launched in 2009 and has spent four productive years. It is estimated that it has gazed about 160,000 target stars.


The new findings goes to show that planets are prevalent in the galaxy. We were raised to know the 9 planets in the solar system, but in recent years Pluto has been re-classified as a minor-planet. It was determined that Pluto is a dwarf planet. You should know that the newly discovered planets belong to the family of exoplanets.

Astronomy, like any other science or profession, is an intricate one. You need formal education.
