Tips to Avoid Bad Falls

Every second, there is an elder here in Singapore who is rushed to an emergency room because of a fall. Many elders fall and this leads to accidental death. Whilst it is true that the rate of fatal fall is high here in Singapore, we can prevent these accidents from happening.

If we have an elder living in the house, it is imperative that we look after him/her and make sure that no harm can fall to him/her. There are many things that we can do to lessen the risks of falling. Here are some tips:

  • Evaluate the risk: It is imperative that we evaluate the risk of falling or slipping in the house. If we see anything that can cause a fall or slip, we have to eliminate it right away.
  • Remove clutter: We have to make sure that our elders have clear paths whenever they walk. The best way to ensure this is to remove any clutter.
  • Remove throw rugs: Throw rugs can be a source of a bad fall. If we want throw rugs, we can at least use double-sided tape to keep the rugs from slithering.

  • Install handrails and grab bars: If we have staircases, handrails may be the best friend of our elders. We also need to install grab bars inside and outside the shower particularly next to the toilet.
  • Use non-slip mats: We have to make sure that the floors are not slippery with the use of non-slip mats.

There are many things that we can do but if it can’t be helped, we have to rush our elder to the hospital right away. We should not ignore this because safety is the least that we can give to our elders.
