Dieting the Right Way

An increasing number of Singaporeans are undertaking healthy lifestyle. When you hear healthy lifestyle, it speaks of right food, adequate exercise and positive attitude. If you want to live healthy, you should first think about the food that you eat. Whether you are hungry or you are just craving for something, you eat three to four times a day.

To others eating more than three to four times a day is normal but not to nutritionists or dieticians. If you want to live healthy and lose weight, you have to think of dieting. However, there is the right way to do it. It is not good to starve or deprive yourself. If you are serious about eating wisely, you can refer to the following strategies to achieve a good nutrition:

  • Be familiar with Healthy Diet Pyramid: If it is your first time to hear about Healthy Diet Pyramid, you should investigate more. Healthy Diet Pyramid will give you an idea of what foods to choose. The Pyramid consists of four food groups (from top to bottom) – fats, oils, sugar & salt, meat & alternatives, fruit & vegetables and rice &alternatives.

  • Eat fruit and vegetables: One must not forget about his/her fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, fibre and minerals but low in fat. It is recommended to eat it every day.
  • Eat grains: Your body needs fuel to keep the mind and body running. You need complex carbohydrates in the form of rice, bread, pasta, biscuits and many more.
  • Eat protein: Protein is also important in body functioning. Protein is in the form of poultry, eggs, meet, cheese, fish and many more. While it is important to eat it, one must not forget to only consume small amounts of it.
  • Avoid alcohol: You enjoy socializing with your co-workers and your friends but you have to set your limits. Drinking sprees are not recommended.
  • Minimize sugar, oil, salt and fats: Think that sugar, oil, salt and fats are just seasonings and they should be consumed lightly. You have to choose unsaturated oils and fats.

Singaporeans should take note of the things mentioned above. The things mentioned above may sound simple or basic but you can rely on that if you want to balance your diet. If you are not sure what to do, you can ask your physicians or better yet your nutritionists. There are many physicians and nutritionists that you can go to here in Singapore.
